THE OPPORTUNITY
We are seeking a Packaging Designer & Cost Estimator for our manufacturing plant in Rancho Cordova, CA. This dual role position requires creativity in designing functional, sustainable, and visually appealing packaging solutions, along with strong analytical skills to estimate costs accurately. The ideal candidate will work closely with cross-functional teams, including product development, marketing, and production, to develop cost-effective and innovative packaging solutions.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Evaluate current packaging and create cost improvement strategies for both existing and new package designs.
- Collaborates with Purchasing and suppliers to assist with researching new types of packages, identify new and innovative test methodology and research, and various types of equipment for testing.
- Identify continuous improvement opportunities within the Packaging Engineering Group; may include preparing written policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of packaging and shipping test methods to assure packaging performance meets shipping stresses.
- Ensure components and assemblies adhere to applicable industry and business standards.
- Create sketches. 3D models, and prototypes using software such as draft sight.
- Conduct product testing and ensure packaging durability, safety, and efficiency in transportation.
- Produce samples with the use of a sample cutting table.
- Identify and quantify cost factors, such as production time, materials, and labor expenses
- Creates Bill of Materials (BOM) for new items and maintains existing (BOM) in the ERP system
- Creates and maintains item codes and descriptions in the ERP system
- Read technical documents to prepare estimates
- Collaborate with production staff and sales representatives on estimates
- Evaluate product cost effectiveness or profitability
- Work with Sales team to prepare estimates and bids for clients
PREFERRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:
Skills:
- In-depth knowledge CAD Software
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel
- Impeccable attention to detail
- Ability to plan, schedule, coordinate and problem solve effectively
Experience:
- 2-4 years of direct involvement in product development and packaging design.
- Research & Development experience
